How Much is 3.5 Grams of Weed?

“How much weed (or hemp) am I buying? Will it be enough? What does it look like?”

These are the common questions people have when they are purchasing weed or smokable hemp flower. It’s definitely a good idea to know what you are buying so you know how long it’s going to last or to make sure you are getting your money’s worth.

Understanding the different weights of how cannabis flower is sold is paramount to being a cannabis consumer. Whether buying a gram, eighth, quarter, or ounce, you’ll now be well-versed in what to expect for your future pot purchases.

Knowing the different weights weed and hemp flower is usually sold in, as well as what each weight looks like, and typical costs are things to familiarize yourself with. No matter where you go across the country (legal states or not) weed is usually
sold in the following weights:

Hemp and Weed Measurements: Gram, Eighth, Quarter, Ounce

The Gram: The gram is the basic unit of measurement across all recreational cannabis and hemp flower products. With ounces, you’re either buying an eighth, a quarter, a half, or a whole ounce.

For reference, here is a conversion guide from ounces to grams:

1/8 ounce= 3.5 grams

1/4 ounce = 7 grams

1/2 ounce = 14 grams

1 ounce = 28 grams

Most cheap scales only measure in tenths of grams, meaning kitchen scales will not accurately weigh your weed or hemp flower. An analytical balance or jewelry scale are both sensitive enough to accurately weigh grams.

It's important to be aware that for all measurements, the type of bud plays into how much it will weigh and what the total amount will look like. Not all bud is created equal. Denser buds weigh more and will look smaller per gram than less dense buds!

How Much is a Gram of Weed?

A gram of weed is roughly enough weed to pack a couple smaller bowls or roll a couple small joints. Most prerolls that are sold in dispensaries usually weigh one gram, as well. In a gram of weed or a gram of hemp flower, you’ll likely get a few small to medium-sized buds.

Cost: The average price for a gram of weed in America is between $8-$15. However, in other places where cannabis is more difficult to obtain, a gram of weed could cost you as much as $20. If you’re headed to the dispensary to buy a gram of weed in recreationally legal states it will cost you right around $10-$15.

How Much is 3.5 Grams of Weed?

An eighth of weed is an eighth of an ounce, which weighs 3.54 grams. Most everywhere you buy weed (dispensary or otherwise) will round the weight of an eighth to 3.5 grams. An eighth will contain several small to medium-sized buds. Depending on how much you smoke, an eighth can last for a week or two, especially if you’re only consuming a little once or twice a day.

Cost: The cost of an eighth in recreational states will vary depending on both the state and the quality of the weed. An eighth of weed can run anywhere from $30-$50 for 3.5 grams. You should be able to get an eighth of a decent strain for no more than $40 in states where weed is recreationally legal. By comparison, Plain Jane prices 3.5 grams of hemp flower at $11-$14.

Is a Quarter Better Than an Eighth?

It’s been a long time since working on fractions in math class. Let us break it down for you:

A quarter is 1/4th of an ounce and weighs 7 grams. So yes, a quarter of weed or hemp flower is more than an eighth of flower. Buying by the quarter is also very common since it is a practical amount for a moderate user to last a couple weeks.

A quarter is more quantity than an eighth. However, it is not necessarily better. If you really want to start saving some money, buying by the half ounce or ounce is where the price per gram starts to get better.

How Much is a Half Ounce of Weed? (14 grams)

A half-ounce (1/2 ounce) is 14 grams of cannabis. Substantial price breaks, in terms of price per gram, typically begin at the half-ounce quantity. Half ounces generally cost between $90 and $160 in dispensaries. Once again, pricing is typically higher in areas where no legal market exists.

A half ounce of CBD is equal to 14 grams

How Much is an Ounce of Weed? (28 grams)

An Ounce of CBD buds

An ounce of cannabis weighs 28 grams. Buying by the ounce is the most cost-effective way to purchase weed or hemp flower. In fact, many dispensaries and caregivers offer ounce specials.

If you are a daily cannabis or hemp flower consumer, ounces are the way to go. The cost of an ounce of weed will run you anywhere from $100-$350 and is usually less expensive in states where recreational cannabis is legal. Always keep in mind that you’ll pay more for top-shelf quality strains.

How Much is a Pound of Weed? (454 grams)

There are a whopping 454 grams in a pound! Few people buy weed or hemp flower by the pound, but we still want to show you what it looks like!

Cost: Considering the legal status of marijuana, distributors take advantage of this to raise product costs. For example, in Colorado, a pound of weed costs around $1500 for premium quality. In California, you can find a pound of weed for $900 a pound, so it’s cheap either place.

In either case, retail customers cannot purchase by the pound at dispensaries. You can, however, purchase hemp flower by the pound!

How Much is Ten Pounds of Weed?

This is ALOT of weed or hemp flower. 4,540 grams to be exact.  What would a single person do with 10 pounds of weed? Who knows, but this is what it looks like:
