A Cheat-Sheet on How to Make Edibles

Ever wonder how easy it is to make edibles at home? Making homemade weed edibles—be it cannabutter or CBD gummies— is not as difficult as one might think. Before you attempt making weed edibles, it's important to cover the basics of edible cooking! Know this, and you'll be able to cook up all sorts of wonders.

#1 The Math: Dosing Marijuana Edibles Correctly

Making homemade marijuana edibles is truly an art and a science. So often, many newbies struggle with creating that perfect edible potent enough to send them to the clouds. In addition, it's important to get the dosage right when it comes to making marijuana edibles at home. So, to make things easier, simply follow my example!

  1.  Figure out how many milligrams (mg) you have in your stash.
  2.  Then figure out how much THC would be present in your given stash.
  3. Consider how much is lost during the decarboxylation phase (it's better to overestimate than underestimate).

So, let's put the math together by following these examples.

Say you have no more than 1 gram of cannabis flower of which has about 20% THC. How do you know how much THC goes into your edibles?

Step 1: 1 gram x 1,000 = 1,000 mg

Step 2: 1,000 mg x 0.20 = 200 mg of THC

Step 3: Account for losses with the decarboxylation process. I chose 90% in this case. Then the equation is as follows 200 mg of THC x 0.90 = 180 mg of THC.

So, in summary, 1 gram cannabis bud containing 20% THC will have a total of 180 mg of THC post-decarboxylation.

#2 Getting to Know the Decarboxylation Process

The decarboxylation process is an essential step needed to reak the benefits of CBD and THC. In a previous article, I discussed how all cannabis nugs contain THCA (not THC). To get THC, you must heat the cannabis nugs at a high enough temperature, resulting in THC formation. The same is true for CBD!

So, here is a cheat sheet you can use when learning how to make weed edibles at home.

  1. Preheat your oven to 230℉
  2. Break up your dried weed nugs into small pieces and carefully place them onto some parchment paper (baking paper)
  3. Bake your cannabis nugs for at least 50 minutes, making sure to stir the weed pieces every 10 minutes.

A few tips to keep in mind

  • The buds need to turn a light golden-brown color. So, if by 35 minutes your buds aren't a golden color, then consider leaving it in the oven for another 10 to 20 minutes.
  • Unlike regular weed nugs, kief will decarboxylate a lot quicker! This means you can preheat your oven at 200 to 240℉. It seems like it takes a total of 45 minutes for kief to decarboxylate fully.
  • It takes a bit longer to decarboxylate CBDA to CBD. So, we recommend leaving your weed nugs in the oven for at least 60 minutes.

Edibles How Do You Use Edibles with Kief?

Making CBD edibles is perfect for anyone looking to alleviate insomnia and anxiety. When making potent CBD edibles at home, we always recommend incorporating some potent Plain Jane CBD hemp kief to your cannabutter.

If you're looking to make some really potent weed brownies fast and easy, consider pre-purchasing some delicious kief! Kief is a highly concentrated form of cannabis that incorporates the resinous glands of the marijuana plant. And as we are aware, these resin glands are responsible for producing the array of cannabinoids and terpenes we all know and love. Plain Jane kief concentrates can be added directly to homemade cannabutter when baking edibles, boosting its CBD effects.

So, when should you use kief in edibles? Use Plain Jane CBD kief when you're looking to really boost the CBD potency of your cookies, cannabutter, or brownies.

Making Weed Tea at Home

Japanese Tea Pot, Make Edibles with Weed Nug

There are all sorts of weed recipes out there! But my favorite by far some good-ole soothing herbal weed tea. Weed tea is a great way to destress and relax after a hard day of work. It's super easy to make and doesn't even take that long to prep. All you need is some CBD oil (or delta-8 THC tinctures) and some dried-up nugs.

Before you jump into the basic weed tea recipe, it's essential to decarboxylate your dried nugs before you steep them. To do this, follow the decarboxylation cheat sheet above, which involves baking buds for 45 to 50 minutes at 240 ° F.

Now, if you don't want to wait a whole 50 minutes for your nugs to decarboxylated, then don't worry! You can also use delta-8 tinctures to give you a boost.

Non-Sweet Herbal Weed Tea

Prep time: 3 minutes

Steep time: 7 to 8 minutes

Ingredients:

  • Plain Jane Delta-8 Oil (tincture) or some Weed-infused coconut oil (pre-made)
  • Some delta-8 THC hemp flower (decarboxylated of course)
  •  Add some of your favorite herbs! I love lavender and chamomile in my green tea.

FAQ on How to Make Marijuana Edibles

Got a question on how to make weed edibles at home? Well, I've made sure to answer some common FAQ that comes with making marijuana edibles at home.

Can you Make Edibles with a Quarter?

Probably could! 0.25 grams of weed isn't enough to make a potent edible and maybe a little bit of a waste. Let's work out the math quickly! If a quarter contained 20% THC, then there's a total of 50 mg of THC in that quarter. Subtract the amount lost with the decarboxylation process, and you'll have 45 mg of THC left over.

How Do you Make sure Edibles Work?

There are three reasons why marijuana edibles made at home may not work. Firstly, you miscalculated your dose resulting in a not-so-potent pot brownie or cookie. Secondly, you may not have allowed your weed nugs to decarboxylate completely (i.e., baked it for less than 30 minutes), or you may have eliminated all the delta-8 THC or CBD by over baking it. So, how do you make sure edibles work? Get the dosage and decarboxylation right!

How long Does it Take for Marijuana Edibles to Kick In?

Delta-8 THC and CBD must pass through the regular digestive process before kicking in. General consensus suggests it can be taken anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour for the effects of marijuana edibles to kick in.

How Much Weed do you Need for Edibles?

To make cannabutter or cannabis-infused olive oil, you tend to require a 1:1 ratio. That is around 8 to 10 grams of dried cannabis nugs for every 1 cup of butter.

Is it cheaper to make your Own Edibles?

It depends on what you're trying to make! If you just want some quick and easy delicious tasting gummies, then it's cheaper to buy weed edibles. For example, Plain Jane delta-8 gummies cost $20 for a mylar bag containing 10 gummies, where each gummy contains precisely 25 mg of delta-8 THC. But, on the other hand, if you want to make some rich cannabis-infused butter or cannabis-infused coconut oil, you will need a minimum of 3.5 to 4.5 grams of dried marijuana flowers.
