Can you take CBD and Prednisone?

CBD drug interactions arise mainly due to liver metabolism issues and present risks that consumers are not currently well aware of. The liver enzyme complex 'cytochrome P450' is responsible for the metabolism of over half of the drugs on the market today. These liver enzymes also metabolize CBD and Prednisone.

CBD and Prednisone Drug Interactions

Different compounds are metabolized in different ways by liver enzymes. Taking two compounds that are metabolized by the same enzymes can alter the way that both compounds act in the body. When you take CBD, the cytochrome P450 enzymes are inhibited. That means that other compounds like Prednisone may either stay in the body for longer because the enzymes cannot break them down or be essentially 'inactivated' entirely because there is no enzyme that can deliver them to the rest of the body.

Other CBD Drug Interactions

In addition to changing the way that Prednisone works in the body, many other common pharmaceuticals have drug interactions with CBD. Most pharmacists are not currently trained to screen for CBD use in consultations, so it is very important to let your doctor and pharmacist know if you are taking CBD and Prednisone (or any other medications).

CBD Side Effects

CBD side effects are generally mild but do exist. The most common side effects of CBD include tiredness, diarrhea, and changes in appetite/weight. If you believe you are experiencing CBD side effects, do not take more CBD. Side effects are the first sign that you are taking too much CBD or that CBD is not right for you. Be sure to consult with your doctor if you experience CBD side effects if you are taking CBD and Prednisone or any other medication, and before you take CBD for the first time.
