CBD Tincture vs. Oil: The Differences, Similarities & Benefits of Each
“CBD oil” and “CBD tincture” are often used interchangeably in retail, but the useful distinction is the actual formula. Read the ingredient list, carrier, flavoring, cannabinoid amount, and available laboratory report for the exact product.
CBD oil
A CBD oil usually combines a hemp extract or CBD isolate with a carrier oil such as MCT oil. Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, and isolate formulas can have different measured cannabinoid profiles.
CBD tincture
Historically, tincture referred to an alcohol-based extract. Many current products labeled “tincture” are oil-based, so the label—not the category name—should settle the question.
What to compare
- Milligrams per bottle and per labeled serving
- Carrier oil, flavors, sweeteners, and allergens
- Measured CBD, delta-9 THC, THCA, and other cannabinoids
- Lot identity and the panels included in the report
Effects and testing
CBD itself does not produce the same intoxication as delta-9 THC, but finished products can contain other cannabinoids and individual responses vary. No CBD oil or tincture is guaranteed drug-test safe. The DOT CBD notice is especially important for safety-sensitive workers.
